Papago Golf Club opened in 1963 in the heart of Papago Park, designed by William F. Bell against the backdrop of the Papago Buttes and the Phoenix skyline. Owned by the City of Phoenix, it became one of the busiest municipal courses in the country, drawing golfers who would park overnight just to secure a tee time. The course hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in 1971 and has served as a regular qualifying site for the Phoenix Open. A major renovation in 2008 restored Bell's original bunkering and greens while modernizing the layout, and Papago is now home to Arizona State University's golf teams.
